Artist, Author. Born in the town of Rianxo, in Galiza (NW Spain), after graduating as a physician in Compostela University, Castelao - as he would always sign his works - started a fruitful career as a self-taught writer and artist. All his works, which included political writings, theatre plays, drawings and satyrical cartoons, had in common his revolt against the backwardness of his country, Galiza, historically neglected by the Spanish Monarchy. All his life Castelao was a staunch supporter of the Republic. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War he was a Member of the Republican Parliament and he went into exile in 1938 short before Gen. Franco defeated the Republic and became a Fascist dictator. Castelao died in Buenos Aires while undergoing surgery and was buried in La Chacarita cemetery. In 1983 his remains were brought to his beloved Galiza and interred in the Panteón de Galegos Ilustres, in Santiago de Compostela.
