Walter graduated from Buena Vista College with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration and accounting. He also completed three courses from Cornell.
He served in the military in the United States Army as an E-3, Personnel Specialist (1960-1962) and an E-6 in the Active Reserves (1963-1964).
Walter married Joan Templeman Wilhite November 27, 1964. They divorced after 22 years.
He was a member of the:
- Catholic Church
- Elks Lodge; served as Exalted Ruler and Trustee.
- Moose Lodge
Walter was an owner, manager and co-manager in the grocery industry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emery Jackson and Ruth Irene (Luthi) Benson; brothers: Larry William Benson and Raymond Benson (infant); and Larry's twin sister, Mary Ellen (Benson) Terry.
Walter was survived by his two daughters and two sons and their spouses of Marshalltown, Iowa; Carmichael, California; Union, Iowa; and Long Beach, California; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; sister of Holstein, Iowa; and his best friend of Goodell.
At the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 16 days, Walter Jerry Benson died at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge from stomach cancer. A celebration of life was held at the Melbourne Cemetery, in Melbourne, Iowa.
