Born one of the four sons of six children of Rev. Thomas Faulkner and Elizabeth Grace Meade, his father was a country church curate; an older brother died before he was born; and his grandfather was a successful surgeon. With both of his parents having scholastic attributes, they instilled him with a classic education. He was the brother of novelist J. Meade Falkner. He graduated from Queen College at Cambridge. He remained a bachelor. Of his siblings, only his brother Charles married with issued children; neither of his two sisters married.
