I'm not exactly sure how old I was, but we were living in Pasadena. We are getting ready to leave, mom had a hair appointment. She tells me to get ready and get my shoes on, but mom has to find them. Then I can't tie my shoes and mom is angry because I don't know how. Now we probably still had an hour before this hair appointment, but my mom was always crazy about being on time. So, in her mind we are going to be late because of me.  After she gets her hair done, we drive past McDonalds and I ask if we could have McDonalds for dinner. She says only little boys who know how to tie their shoes get McDonald's. So, when I get home, I spend all afternoon practicing tying my shoes until I have it mastered.  I remember being so proud of myself. I went and showed her that I could tie my shoes, she told me to do it again, and I did, and she said great job, now we can go to McDonald's.  Mom took me and I ordered a Big Mac, my first one. I just remember sitting on the couch after eating and mom holding me while we watched I love Lucy. It's the first time I remember being loved. It just felt so great. I knew my mom was proud of me and loved me.

I've been very fortunate to have the feeling of being loved throughout my life with my wife, my kids, my extended family. But it all started with Mom.
