Carl R. Calloway was born December 20, 1929, in Kingsport, Tennessee, the son of C.G. and Hattie Calloway.

At an early age. Cart gave his life to Christ and heard the call to preach. He responded to that call and gave his life to the ordained ministry in 1951.

Carl was married to Charlotte Stills of Gray, TN, in June 1953. Three children were born to their union: Mrs. Joy Loven of Georgetown. MD; Mr. Gary Calloway of Charlotte, NC; and Mrs. Charlene Cutshall of Gray, TN.

After graduation from East Tennessee State University in 1953, Carl spent two years in the U.S. Army. After returning from the service, he enrolled at Columbia Seminary in Decatur, GA. After one year there, he began serving a Methodist Circuit at Old Trap, NC, in the Elizabeth City District of the North Carolina Annual Conference.

After moving to Henderson, NC, he completed his seminary work at Southeastern Baptist Seminary at Wake Forest, He also attended Duke University for four summers for the Pastor's Course of Study. Carl continued to serve in the North Carolina Annual Conference until 1968. Upon returning to this area, he served as pastor of Gray UMC from 1968- 1971.

From 1971 until 1973, Carl worked at Holston Defense and also served as an evangelist for a number of revivals in area churches of all denominations.

In 1973, Carl and Charlotte were in a car accident that left Carl with devastating injuries. Many thought Carl would not survive the ordeal, but he did. Though confined to a wheelchair, Carl's desire to serve God never waned.

Carl dearly loved God, the Church, his family, and people. He kept his love for preaching until the very end, preaching his final sermon on Sunday evening, October 12, 1997, at Gray UMC. His sermon title was Love. That evening. Carl preached with clarity and power.

He was always ready to share the good news of the gospel, which he did without apology or reservation.

Carl Calloway was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. We thank God for giving him to us for these 68 years.

Memorial services were conducted December 20, 1997, at Gray UMC with Rev. Mike Hubble, Rev, James C. Henry, and Rev. Sam Leidig officiating. Entombment was at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens, Blountville, TN.
