Jesse "Howard" Ford moved from St. Louis to DeSoto, Missouri in 1952 where he lived with his wife and four children until the time of his tragic death. He was an auto mechanic for the Riefling Automobile Company in St. Louis, Missouri from June 28, 1948 to June 15, 1957, when the company went out of business. The last two years there he served as shop steward of the machinists union. He belonged to IAM local 777. Shortly before his untimely death he and a friend, Chick Collier, opened an auto repair shop in East St. Louis, Illinois. Business was going well until a chain hoist broke allowing a car to fall, crushing Howard beneath. He died the next day at St. Mary's Hospital of extensive injuries. He was 42 years old. He was preceded in death by his mother, Tennessee (Tinnie) Frances Graham Ford and three infant siblings. He left behind his wife, Ruth Lucille Wilson and two sons, Jesse Howard, Jr. and Jack Kenneth, and two daughters Ruth Ann and Dale Frances, his father, Wilson Frances Ford, three brothers: Luther (Ruby), Clarence (Juanita), Daniel (Jane); four sisters: Pansy (Joe)Stark, Thelma (Elco) Scott, Ruby (Tom), Opal(Roy)Stratman, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and numerous friends.
