William Gerard Walker, 82, died Sept. 17, 1996, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown, followed by a service with Chaplain Don McCullough officiating. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Walker was born March 3, 1914, in Odanah, Wis. As a teenager, he was involved in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Later, he played minor league professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs organization in the Minneapolis area leagues. At that time, he met and played with many future Hall of Famers including his friend, Ted Williams, his family said. During World War II, Mr. Walker served with the 61st Air Force Troop Carrier Group. He was stationed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was then stationed in Brazil for training to fight in the Pacific. In 1946, Mr. Walker married Anna Mae Fellman. His military career took them to Lowery Air Force Base in Denver. He was the chief flight line maintenance NCO and a charter member of the NCO Club at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. In 1952, the Walkers moved to Anchorage. Mr. Walker was the chief flight line inspector at Elmendorf Air Force Base until retiring in 1962. After retiring from the military, Mr. Walker became an avid sportsman and followed with great interest the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves baseball teams. During his last years, he was a mentor to many young men in Alaska. He will be missed greatly by his many friends in the Anchorage area.

Mr. Walker is survived by his stepdaughter, Joan Hagen of Las Vegas, Nev.
