William Hooten appears to be the first born son of Elijah. His mother is unknown.

Through census records we can follow the Hooten family based on Elijah, Sr. pension application in which he states:

1 He was born in North Carolina, the County he does not remember – in the year 1753.

2 He has no record of his age.

3. When called into service he lived in Cumberland County, from there he removed to Grayson County Virginia, from there to Kentucky near Scottsville – from thence to Warren County Tennessee, from thence to White County Tennessee where he now lives.

4. When called into the service he volunteered.

Grayson, Virgina is -his assumed place of birth, since this is the only county Elijah, Sr. mentions as living in but Virginia is all that is documented.

He is first documented by name on the tax rolls in Grayson County, Virginia in 1796 - the year he married Lilly Cornutt. He and his sister, Nancy were married by Rev. Elisha Bedwell.

While in Grayson County, William was active in his father's affairs. He is mentioned in two different court cases as handling details for his father.

He appears on the 1816 tax rolls in Allen County, Kentucky then in 1819 he is recorded as purchasing land in Warren. Then in 1824 he has a judgement against him, and his land is confiscated for bill payment. This is the last verified location with Elijah, Sr. While there is speculation that he moved to Indiana there is no documented proof that the men from Tennessee are the same men in Indiana except by having the same name.

The wording on land confiscation in the newspapers is open to different interpretations. It states the land where Littleton lives and William once lived.

His father-in-law, David Cornutt died in 1847 and left part of his estate to Lilly but it is not noted if the inheritance was claimed. There is no note of an out- of-state attorney finalizing the will and transfer of

assets found as of yet.
