Funeral services for the REV. BERNARD PENDER, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in East St. Louis, Illinois since 1942, will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in East St. Louis, Illinois.
Father Pender, who was 67 years old, died on Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital in East St. Louis, Illinois. He had been in failing health for about six months, and preached his last service on New Year's Day. A native of Ireland, he came to the United States in 1921 and entered Kenrick Seminary. After he was ordained in 1926 he became assistant pastor of the old St. Patrick's Church in East St. Louis, Illinois.
He became pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Cairo, Illinois in 1928, remaining there until his return to East St. Louis as pastor of St. Patrick's Church. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary McNamara (Find-a-Grave memorial 51226443) of St. Louis, Missouri, and a brother, James Pender of Chicago, Illinois. ~~~ ST.
