James New Freel, a resident of this city for 22 years, died unexpectedly Sunday morning while attending services at the Church of Christ, corner of Kansas avenue and Third street.


Mr. Freel had been in ill health for several years but he had been feeling quite well lately. His home was at 1025 West Kansas avenue.


Before moving to this city, he lived in Coffeyville. He was born Mar. 28, 1874, near Fort Scott, Kas. He was married Jan. 16, 1927, to Mrs. Rose Brown. Hew as employed as chief engineer at the local packing plant until his health failed a few years ago.


Survivors include the widow; one daughter, Mrs. Pearl Radcliff of Los Angeles; two step-daughters, Mrs. Fern Walton of Wichita and Mrs. Jessie Henderson of this city; two step-sons, James Brown of Harrisburg, Ill., and I. O. Brown of Oklahoma City; and one brother, Frederick C. Freel of Kansas city. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.


No funeral arrangements have been made. The Jess Rindt Mortuary is in charge.

James Newton Freel was married to Rosetta "Rose" Frances Layton. He preceded her in death and was buried in an unmarked grave next to her first husbands gravestone, Franklin "Frank" Ord Brown. He acted as a grandfather to Rose's grandchildren and one of those children was Howard Henderson. One of Howard's final wishes was to have a gravestone placed for his Grandpa Freel and Howard's son, Jim, satisfied that wish in November of 2022.
