Walter's surname was originally EWERT, but began appearing in records such as the US Federal Census, spelled phonetically, as "Evert", but there's no evidence that this family used that variation themselves, though the families of his cousins did. With the advent of WW1 and high anti-German feelings in the USA, the family began using the "EVERETT" surname. His middle name was for his father. Walter gave his son the middle name of "Ewert" so his children would remember the original family name.

Walter was one of 14 children, one of the few that ever left the Cleveland area. His early life is vague. He probably didn't finish high school, but went to work as a young teenager. He told his third wife that his father was a stern disciplinarian who demanded silence at the dinner table. He gave the impression that he left home due to conflicts with the man. However, since Walter had some difficulties with anger and alcohol, his responsibility in the matter has to be considered. He was said to have been a Golden Gloves boxing champion as a younger man, bantam weight, but the dates and locations of his participation are unknown.

By 1934, he was in Brooklyn, New York. It's unknown why he went there. He met and married a young girl from Indiana, named Mabel Jane Westfall. She's the mother of Walter's oldest child, a daughter named Barbara Jean Everett. It's unknown when the couple divorced. By 1941, he was married to a woman named Selma Miller back in Cleveland. There seems to have been no children from that second marriage according to older relatives. She divorced him circa 1946.

Somewhere along the way, he was in the military, probably the Army. A photograph of him in uniform was lost in the 1960s. One child's birth certificate states that he was in the Army, but since no record can be found at the National Personnel Records Center, his records must be among the millions destroyed by the fire of 1973.

He may have met his third wife, Margaret, on a trip to Trinidad; it's unclear. By the late 1940s, he was living in Miami with her. Their marriage date and place are unknown. A son was born circa 1949 who lived only a few hours. His name may have been Richard. Two more children followed.

Memories of him are dim; his younger son, Walter, had no memory of him at all and as for me, only a few concrete mental images. He worked at the Miami Window Corporation making aluminum windows and doors. He would come home with cuts on his hands from the sharp metal and Margaret would give him first aide. One day he brought home a used two-wheeled bicycle that was way too big for me. He propped me up on the seat and ran up and down the street, happily pushing me on the bike like a carnival ride.

Other memories are few. I remember him going to the hospital for a long time and when he came home, he was extremely fragile, needing constant care. He died at home from cancer of the pancreas complicated by alcoholism. Walter had a large funeral, full of flowers, attended by his surviving siblings who came from Cleveland; his oldest child, Barbara Jean, from New York City. I remember seeing him in his casket. My mother thought it would be nice if I placed a bouquet of some of the flowers in his hands and kissed him goodbye. However, I did not think so - he was obviously dead and the whole thing was creepy to me. She held my up to him, but I screamed and kicked so much that she gave up the gesture.
