Martha was born in Russia and died in Elmira CA. She is the daughter of Savelie Maximovich Popov (1830-1867) and Anastacia E. Samadurov (1835-1867). She is one of six children: Varvara, Martha, Egor, Efimia, Maxim, Fred. Her sisters Varvara and Efimia stayed behind in Russia; however, their descendants came to America.

Martha was married to Fyodor Abrosimovich Poppin before 1872 in Russia. They had five known children: Ivan (John), Ermolai (Elmer), Vassili (William), Yakov (Jack), and Manya (Mary).

Martha came to America in 1907 with son Ivan; her son Vassili had previously come to America as did Yakov. Her daughter Mary died in Salsk, USSR about 1922.

Question to my father, George Poppin on May 18, 2000: June Loskutoff stated that Matryona Popov (Grandfather Poppin's mother) was the local mid-wife. She was a midwife in Vacaville. You briefly mentioned it in your autobiography. What do you know about this information?

Yes, she helped bring me to this cruel world on 31 August 1918...Brother Jim told me he had heard "hushed whispers and unusual noises" the night mom was giving birth to me..He got up to investigate and was unceremoniously "shushed" back into his room.

From Fae Papin Veronin's book "Molokans in AZ" "From the Autobiography of Martha Conovaloff Papin" She was the colony nurse and doctor. She made a salve for Luke Conovaloff's wife Fenya and in two weeks the wound was healed.

There is an entry in the CA Death Index that states a Matma Popin died in Sonoma County on 7/18/1931. She was 79 years old, putting her birth year in 1852. The way the death index is transcribed, I think this woman is Great-grandmother Martha Popov Poppin (Grandfather Poppin's mother). I will request the death certificate. For now, this date will be a place holder for her in the history. (Nancy Posey)

Re: My father's great grandmother Matryona (Martha) Savelevna Popov

NAP: Matryona (Martha) Savelevna Popov, b. Approx. 1852 Salim, Kars, Russia d. July.18.1931 in Elmira, Sonoma, CA. From your story, Great -grandfather Poppin, Fyodor (Theodore) Abrosimivich Poppin, was not well and died. She and her sons and daughter lived in Russia and eked out a living. I would imagine she did not want to be left behind when her sons left. Tell me your fondest memories of her.

GJP: She looked OLD and shriveled ...reminded me of a living ghost with her head in a scarf , no teeth and having a deep cough...thought she had TB. Actually I was rather frightened of her appearance. She was kind and soft spoken...I can still hear her soft voice calling my dad..." Ivan (ee-van), Ivan" as she lay dying in her bed at brother Alex's house in Elmira. Her sons, my dad and uncle Bill Poppin, were so attentive to her death bed needs and tried their best to comfort her and took turns to be at her bedside as she was fading away.

My thoughts of her when I was 7-8 years of age were not that pleasant. She seemed to be the instigator of disagreements between mom and dad.....so hurtful to me . I recall her visits were not that pleasant to me. She died in brother Al's house in Elmira and is buried in the Vacaville, CA cemetery ( circa 1930-31) God rest her soul.

Nancy,
The information we have regarding 'Martha' is a stone in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery written in Russian. The closest interpretation we could get reads: "Matkena S. Papina faithful servant of God while she lived rests her body mom and granny received eternal rest d. 18 July 1931 @ 79th year, 2nd day, 3rd month." b. 20 Apr 1852 d. 18 July 1931 wife of Fred; dau. of Joe Popoff.

We hope this information is helpful.
