Stephen Eddie Thorn, son of Sanford and Abigail Thorn, was born near Peoria, IL, May 6, 1863, and in early infancy removed with his parents to Hammondsburg, IA, and continued to reside in Warren county until the time of his death at his home near Medora Sept. 23, 1923, aged 60 years, 4 months and 17 days.

He was the sixth of seven children, two of whom survive him, Mrs. Nancy Sones of Indianola and Sanford S. of Nebraska City, Nebraska.

On October 28, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Francis Gennettie Lake. To this union were born eight children: Burley of Indianola; Mrs. Stella May Bolter, Venice, CA; Della Leona, who died in infancy; Harry Walter of Indianola; Ila Eddie, New Virginia; Oral Albert of Lacona; Mrs. Bulah Frances Kerr of New Virginia; and Russell Lake at home.

Perhaps his outstanding characteristic was like that of his father, the integrity of his word with regard to material obligations and his ambition to live true to type in this particular. At about 35 years of age he was converted and united with the Otter Creek Christian Church, where he remained a steadfast member until the time of his death. He was an ordained elder and served as Sunday School superintendent and has been an active delegate and counselor in the conferences of the church.

The hospitality of his home was most remarkable, for he was no respector of persons among preachers, acquaintances and strangers. Though he was a sick man and great sufferer for the past 15 years, he could drive away blues and scatter more sunshine than any other man in the community.

He leaves, besides his brother and sister, his wife, seven children and nine grandchildren, and a multitude of friends to revere his memory. Funeral services were conducted by a former pastor, Rev. C.W. Stewart of Tryon, OK. Interment was at Indian Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Card of Thanks: We wish to express our thanks to our many friends and neighbors for the help and sympathy extended us at the time of our sorrow. Mrs. S. E. Thorn and family.

Died Suddenly Sunday Evening at His Home Near Medora

Another one of the older and most substantial residents of Warren county, Stephen Thorn, passed away suddenly last Sunday evening about 8:00. Full particulars are not available as this is written, but it is understood that Mr. Thorn was sitting quietly in his home when, without warning, he dropped and was gone.

Arrangements for the funeral are waiting upon word from his daughter in California. Mr. Thorn came to Warren county with his parents when two years old and settled in Liberty township and has spent his entire life in that and Squaw townships, where his home has been for many years. He was of that generation which took up the work left off by the original pioneers and carried to fruition in the development of the farm homes of the west. He had seen enough of the vicissitudes of early life in a new country to appreciate the heritage that had been left, and well did he meet the responsibility that came to him.

He was a man of sterling character and high ideals. He used occasionally to drop into this office for a chat and his happy disposition, common sense comments of current affairs, and friendly interest always made a bright spot in the routine of the day.

Mr. Thorn had told relatives that on a former occasion he had an attack which nearly cost him his life when he was alone in one of the feed lots on his farm. He described the helpless sensation of feeling death coming on, but that time the heart recovered its rhythm and his life was spared.
