Rev. Clyde B. Smith , 82, of Wilmington, NC, passed away Friday, September 22, 2006, at his residence, after a yearlong illness.

Rev. Smith was born November 6, 1923, in Rockingham County, NC, son of the late Aultsey Gordon Smith and Mary Sue Branscome Smith . His sister and a granddaughter preceded him in death.

Rev. Smith attended UNC at Chapel Hill, Texas Wesleyan University in Ft. Worth, TX, and Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX. He pastored in churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Asheville, and Brevard. He attended chaplaincy training at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and did his internship at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC. He then served as chaplain at Central State Hospital in Norman, OK for 19 years. Since his retirement, he also served as interim pastor at Goshen Baptist Church in Brunswick County.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Grant Smith ; five children, Cheryl Banks and husband, Dwight, of Purcellville, VA, Rebecca Wheeler and husband, Rick, of Chapel Hill, NC, Dr. Stephen Smith and wife, Sandy, and Timothy Smith and wife, Ellen, all of Wilmington, NC, and Lisa Schneider and husband, John, of Edmond, OK; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
