Anchorage resident Ronald JOHN KUCZEK, 62, died April 20, 2001, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown. A memorial service was at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 8110 Jewel Lake Road, with a celebration of life reception afterward.

Mr. Kuczek was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Chicago. He stayed in Illinois until enlisting in the Navy in 1956 and Air Force in 1962. He married in the late 1950s. In 1967, Mr. Kuczek received a bachelor's degree in professional meteorology from St. Louis University. In 1970, he was promoted to captain, and in 1971, he received a master's degree in meteorology from the University of Utah. In April 1971, Mr. Kuczek and his family drove to Alaska. He retired from the Air Force in 1978. He received the Meritorious Service Medal for being a responsible officer and implementing a new, ground-based cold fog dispersal system. He implemented, refined and brought to fully operational status a research and development system that cut the annual cold fog dispersal cost at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He also received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Mr. Kuczek later became executive assistant to the general manager of Municipal Light & Power in Anchorage. During that time, he also started commercial fishing for salmon and halibut in Kodiak. After retiring from ML&P in 1995, he became a broker, buying and selling halibut and sablefish individual fishing quotas. In 1996, he suffered a stroke. He overcame some of its effects as he worked toward rehabilitation. His family said: ''A fighter and a believer in hard work and dedication, Kuczek blew away the odds for his survival, living his new life and sharing his never changing character with those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved him.''

Mr. Kuczek is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Kuczek of Anchorage; daughter, Cheryl Ann Kuczek of Seattle; son, Ronald John Kuczek Jr. of Anchorage; sisters, Ramona Hansmeyer and Roberta Jackson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; brother, James Kuczek of Huntley, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage 99508.
