Longtime Alaska resident Benjamin O. McWhorter, 92, died peacefully March 22, 2007, at his daughter's home in Rogue River, Ore., where he was receiving home care from his daughter, Kathryn Sands, and Joel and Shaun Norris, along with Lovejoy Hospice. A celebration of life was at 7380 W. Evans Creek in Rogue River. A memorial gathering in Anchorage with his wife, Myrtle, was April 20 at the Mary Conrad Center, 9100 Centennial Drive. Afterward, a celebration of life was at the Moose Lodge, 4211 Arctic Blvd.

Ben "Mac" McWhorter, son of Mark and Maude McWhorter, was born April 24, 1914, in Memphis, Texas. He was a World War II veteran. Ben met his wife, Myrtle, in 1952, and they were married on Jan. 25, 1953, and moved to Anchorage to raise their family. He helped start the Spenard Fire Department. Ben worked for the Anchorage School District for 25 years as a mechanic and loved working on automobiles, fishing, hunting and camping with family and friends. His family wrote: "Ben was a member of the American Legion and Elks Lodge and veterans organizations. He was the longest and oldest member, at age 92, of the Anchorage Moose Lodge. "Ben will be well missed by all family and friends."

Ben is survived by his wife, Myrtle McWhorter of Anchorage; daughters, Kathryn Sands of Rogue River, Sonia McWhorter of Puyallup, Wash., Nancy Johnson of Sutton, and Anita Phelps of Anchorage; son, Eddie Wickberg of Gilbert, Ariz.; sister, Idimay Labruchrie and children of Santa Anna, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, John Wickberg. Local arrangements are with Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary. Memorial at adn.com/obituaries
