Longtime Alaska resident Myrtle I. McWhorter, 87, died peacefully June 9, 2007, at Mary Conrad Center in Anchorage. A military graveside service was at Angelus Memorial Park. A celebration of life was held afterward at the Anchorage Moose Lodge, 4211 Arctic Blvd.
Mrs. McWhorter was the daughter of Veora and Archie Burden. She was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Great Falls, Mont. She met her husband, Ben "Mac" McWhorter, in Ocean Park, Wash., in 1952. They married Jan. 25, 1953 and moved to Anchorage with their five children. Mrs. McWhorter was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 38-year member of the Anchorage Moose Lodge. She was an Anchorage School District cafeteria worker and a day care provider during her early years in Alaska. Her family wrote: "She will be remembered for her beauty through and through and her selflessness. Her happiest memories were with family and friends, laughing, camping and traveling in her motor home. She was one of a kind and her family will miss her deeply." Mrs. McWhorter was preceded in death by her husband, Ben O. McWhorter, and son, John W. Wickberg. She was the last surviving member of her siblings.
She is survived by her son, Edward Wickberg of Gilbert, Ariz.; daughters, Nancy Johnson of Sutton, Anita Phelps of Anchorage, and Kathy Sands of Rogue River, Ore.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
