Anchorage Daily News October 6, 2006

Ruth M. Moen, 90, a resident of Anchorage for more than 60 years, died peacefully Sept. 30, 2006, at her homestead. A service was at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel.

Mrs. Moen was born March 31, 1916, in Cable, Wis. She married her husband, Howard, in 1941, just before he shipped out for service in the Army. While he served in World War II, she moved to St. Louis and worked in a munitions factory. After her husband's return, they moved to Alaska, where he was a foreman for the Alaska Railroad and she cooked for the section gang. They homesteaded up the hill from the Potter section house in a one-room log house that was accessible only by foot or horseback, her family wrote. She worked tirelessly carving out life in what was then the middle of nowhere. She loved nature and enjoyed picking berries. She also loved animals and raised chickens, goats and horses to sustain her family. In later years, she was active in local politics and development. She was a founding member of Home and Land Owners (HALO) and a member of the Pioneers of Alaska, and she was influential in many other associations that supported thoughtful development in the Rabbit Creek and Golden View area. She often joked that she was "retired" as she diligently focused on various political and community projects. Moen Park is a tribute to Ruth and Howard Moen's efforts over the years. Mrs. Moen was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her brother, Almarion Seamons of Oregon; children and their spouses, Ann Kathleen and Tony Makrynakis of Anchorage, Janey Moen-Holmes and Bill Holmes of Anchorage, and Sidney and Pam Moen of Michigan; grandchildren, Gena Coleman, Gene Nierstheimer, Karen Brim and John Moen; and great-grandchildren, Auston Coleman, Paige Coleman and Christopher Nierstheimer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Friends of Pets.
