Anchorage resident Marjorie Griffith Nelson, 88, died Dec. 27, 1998, at her home after a long illness. A remembrance service was at the Anchorage Senior Center.

The fifth of six children, Mrs. Nelson was born June 17, 1910, in Wendall, Idaho, to Pearl Kinne Griffith and Clarence James Griffith. She earned a bachelor's degree and was a dietitian at Mills College in California before her marriage to Floyd Nelson in 1938 in Los Angeles. Their four children were born in San Mateo, Calif., where the family lived until 1953. That year, they were lured to Alaska by home movies taken by Mrs. Nelson's brother, Don Griffith. They bought a basement in Spenard, and Mr. Nelson completed the family home, where Mrs. Nelson lived until her death. She went back to work after her children were in school. She retired in 1980 after 20 years with the Public Health Service at the Alaska Native Medical Center. She worked part-time at the hospital for several years afterward. Mrs. Nelson lived in the same home for 45 years. She looked forward each summer to spending time in her yard.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by her daughters, Kristen Nelson of Anchorage and Kathleen Cunningham of Palmer; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Debbie Nelson of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Carol Nelson of Anchorage; son-in-law, Mike Cunningham of Anchorage; sister-in-law, Denney Griffith of Eugene, Ore.; and grandchildren, Gregory Nelson and Michael and Michelle Nelson, all of Anchorage, Lindsay and Evan Nelson of Vancouver, and Marjorie and Peter Cunningham of Palmer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; son, William; brothers, James, Glynn and Donald Griffith; and sisters, Mabel Crane and Gwen Andrews. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery near the graves of her husband and son. Arrangements were by Anchorage Funeral Home.
