HEDRICH.--Irene Blanchard Hedrich was born in Long Green, Maryland, only living daughter of Charles K. Blanchard and Laura Virginia Blanchard. She had five brothers. Early in her life, the family moved their home to the state of Pennsylvania and eventually settled in the fast-growing oil town of Bradford. There she graduated from high school and being naturally talented with teaching ability, found an outlet for this capacity in the city schools. For ten years, prior to her marriage, Mrs. Hedrich taught and was principal of the Elm Street School. She was also interested in Sunday School Education and the Epworth League efforts in the First Methodist Church of Bradford. Through the latter organization, she became acquainted with Philip Hedrich, an ardent Christian in the League. This friendship became a serious interest and on June 20, 1901, Philip Hedrich and Irene Blanchard were united in marriage in the Blanchard home by Mr. Hedrich's brother-in-law who was a German Methodist minister, Rev. Herbert Pape.
To them were born three children, Laura B., Philip, Jr., and Edgar B. Of these three, only the daughter now survives, Mrs. Laura B. Hawkins, with whom Mrs. Hedrich resided at the time of her death at 45 Trafalgar Street, Rochester, New York. The youngest son, Edgar, passed to his Eternal Home after suffering three years, at the early age of sixteen. Philip, Jr., who lived a very full and interesting life as a good husband, father and business man, passed to his Heavenly Home only one year before his mother, at the age of forty-five. Philip Hedrich, Sr., preceded his wife to his reward in 1926 at Clearfield, Pennsylvania, at the home of his daughter.
Irene Hedrich gave unstintingly of herself to the Christian life of every community to which the Genesee Conference sent them and through the years, friends whom they made followed them with their prayers and interest. They were first sent to Bliss and Eagle, then East Otto, Maples and Eddyville; later Scio and Knights Creek, Oakfield, then Spencerport and Elmgrove. At this last appointment, Mrs. Hedrich's health became so impaired he was forced to retire at Conference time, in 1925. His death occurred five months later at the home of their daughter in Clearfield, Pennsylvania.
Through the years after her husband's death when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hedrich was energetic, ambitious and was a loving "second mother" to her three grandsons.
At the time of her death at the age of eighty-one, Mrs. Hedrich was a member of Spencerport Methodist Church and Utility Class of that Sunday School. She was buried from Hedges Memorial Chapel in Rochester, New York. Rev. Ernest Kerrison of Spencerport Methodist Church together with Rev. Dr. Weldon Crossland of Rochester: Asbury First Methodist Church, had charge of this final service.
Mrs. Hedrich is survived by two brothers, Edgar H. Blanchard of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Harry M. Blanchard of Bradford, Pennsylvania, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, in addition to her daughter, Mrs. Laura B. Hawkins of Rochester, New York.
