Aged 53, he was named Apostolic Administrator El Petén on February 3, 1978, and on December 3, 1982, was appointed Bishop of the Titular See of Nasai. He received his episcopal consecration on January 15, 1983, from Archbishop Oriano Quilici assisted by Bishops Miguel Angel García y Aráuz and Jaime Brufau Maciá CM., and was elected Apostolic Vicar of El Petén on February 3 of the following year.
Following the retirement of the named Msgr. García y Aráuz, First Bishop of the Diocese of Jalapa, Avila del Aguila was appointed as his successor on January 29, 1987, aged 62. He resigned the pastoral government of his See on December 5, 2001 at the age of 77, when Msgr. Julio Edgar Cabrera Ovalle was appointed as his successor.
The Bishop died on Saturday, May 3, 2008 aged 84, and was interred inside the Cathedral of Jalapa following Requiem Mass on Monday, May 5.
