Margaret E. Furgerson was a native of Kentucky, born in 1822. In 1845, she was in Missouri, which is where she married Hesekial (he also went by Hezekiah) Guire Cable, a native of Delaware, on March 4th, 1845, in Saline, Missouri. Her new husband was a Farmer and, when the 1850 Census was taken on Sep 16, 1850, in Polk County, Iowa, the couple, now with a five yr. old son, Edward H., declared they were farming the land there and that Margaret's older brother, Nathaniel Furgerson, age 34 (and also from Kentucky), was residing with them. He was, by trade, a shoemaker, and listed as illiterate. During the next decade the family moving westward, as the birth of the following children shows. In April, 1853 they were in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co., Iowa when their next child, a daughter they named Sarah Elizabeth, was born. In 1857, when their daughter Margaret was born, they were living in Texas. In October, 1859, the family was living in Arizona, which is when their son William Scott was born. When the family was enumerated on July 28, 1860, the family had moved to Aqua [Agua] Caliente Township*, San Diego, California, just outside of Puerta de la Cruz Indian village. Hezekiah, Elizabeth and their four young children were again listed as a Farming family. The homestead is listed as valued at $1,500 with cash assets of $800. In addition to the Cable family, the following persons lived with them:
Charles Irving, 33, of England, a Sailmaker,
Thomas Freeman, 21, of New York, a Silver plater with cash assets totaling $2,000
James Dixon, 31, from Virginia, a Stage driver with $500 in cash assets
Jon Place, 37, from Ohio, also a Stage driver with $200 in cash assets
and Jose Garcia, 25, a native of Mexico, listed as a monthly Laborer.
The 1870 Census has eluded me, however 1870 found them losing a young son who would have been included in that census, had he lived. He was Frankie Cable, who had been born in San Bernardino, California on Oct 17, 1867. He died Jan 17th, 1870 and was laid to rest in what would be named the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., California. His headstone was engraved "Our Son". When the family was enumerated on July 1st, 1880, they were listed as living at Martin's Voting Precinct**, San Bernardino, California, in a new dwelling. Both Hesekial and Margaret were listed by initial only, but he was still a Farmer. Only two sons who had been born in California were still on their farm. They were listed as "W.S."[William Scott], age 19, and "H.C."[Henry C.], age 18, both listed as 'Laborers'. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, had married and was living adjacent to her family. Her husband was listed as "J.V. Walin", age 44, from Kentucky, a Laborer. Sarah was only listed as "S", age 28. There were four children, all born in California: George, age 12, a Laborer, "B.F.", age 8, also a son, and two daughters listed as "M", age 6, and "E", age 4.
Unfortunately, the 1890 Census was destroyed by fire, so there were no further census records until 1900 (unless a state census was taken). But, sadly, Margaret died on January 5th, 1891, and was buried in the same cemetery as Frankie, Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, San Bernardino. Her husband followed her in death on March 26th, 1899 and shares a headstone with Margaret at Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, San Bernardino, California. They are listed as "Pioneers". May they Rest in Peace.

*Aqua Caliente Township" is now "Agua Caliente County Park" in San Diego County, California. It is known for it's geothermal springs. It's mailing address is 39555 Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849, Julian, CA.
