Sarah Jane was the daughter of Walter Monroe and Eleanor Owen Parrish. She was one of seven children.

Sarah Jane was the second wife of Joseph Richard Bourn. She became "Step-Mom" to the eight children that he had from a prior marriage, and she and Jospeh had eight children of their own: Emma Lillian, Nellie Pearl, Joseph Richard, Lula May, Rosa Alice, Eddie, Alpha, and George Lawrence.

Sarah was a hard working farm wife and mother despite the fact that she lost her right hand in an accident with a saw. Her granddaughter, Jessie Gardner Golden remembered her tying her shoes faster than she herself could.

She was asthmatic, and asthma is listed on her death certificate as the cause of her death.
