Robert was a 1944 graduate of Huntington High School and later attended Indiana University/Purdue University in Fort Wayne for three years. He served 20 years in the armed forces. He had worked at the Huntington Herald Press from 1949-1975. He later worked as a salesman for Commonwealth Insurance for 14 years, retiring in 1990. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge #805 in Huntington where he was a life member, he was also a life member with the Veterans of Foreign War Post 2689 of Huntington and was a member of the Van Buren American Legion. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was born on November 24, 1925 in Huntington, a son of Roscoe and Mae (Householder) Ackerman. He was united in marriage to Jean Ann Leonhardt on October 5, 1947 in Huntington. His wife survives. Additional survivors include a son: Richard E. Ackerman of Huntington, a daughter: Cynthia A. Avery of Kalamazoo, MI, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Ed Ackerman, Jack Ackerman and Trent Ackerman.
