In March 1881, George W. Moore and his cousin, David A. Austin, started a blacksmith shop in Claiborne. A year or so later George fell out of the hay loft and broke his back. While recovering, George made a deal with God to give up his interest in the blacksmith shop and become a preacher if God would make him better. So after recovering, he became a Brethren preacher and started a mercantile store in Claiborne. He also served several terms as the town postmaster starting on Sep. 16, 1885.
He married Bell Adina Hitt on September 29, 1887 in Marysville, Ohio.
Their children are: Mary Edith, Nellie Jane, George Wilbur, Eunice Blanche, Jonathan David, Esther Irene, Ruth Alberta, Leah Mildred, Julia Bernice, Russell Edward and Eldon Alpha.
