He met Gladys Lucille Hunt McCollum while working as a conductor on the Interurban train running between Marion, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio. They were married on Christmas Day 1917.
JD and Gladys had five children: Doris Lucille, William Owen, Margaret Belle, Richard David and George Willis.
