Alfred Paul Vivian was the youngest son of James Vivian and Mary Ralph Vivian. He was one of 5 children, his siblings include Ennis, Joseph, James, and Ethel. The Vivian's arrived in the United States in 1886, from England, and made their home in Pennsylvania.

Alfred's second wife was Emma B Maus, married in 1912 they had 2 children. A son who died shortly after birth in 1913, and Grace Pauline in 1915.
