He was born in Public, Kentucky to Josiah S. and Sarah Pauline (Bullock) Patterson. He did not like his real name and asked everyone to call him "John." He married Sophia V. Burdine on December 2, 1917 in Pulaski County, KY and had 1 child. He married Sophia's younger sister, Lillie May Burdine on April 8, 1924 in Pulaski County, KY and had 4 more children. He moved to Indianapolis, Indiana around 1943. He was a farmer as a young man, and later worked for the American Can Company and the Schuster Block Company. During World War II, he worked at Noblitt-Sparks in Greenwood, IN for two years. He worked as a caretaker at Garfield Park in Indianapolis for 15 years. He retired two years before his death. He died of a heart attack while sitting at his kitchen table eating breakfast.
