Mary Elizabeth Whittle was the daughter of John Whittle and his wife Mary Swift. She was born in Whissendine Rutland on 5 August 1867 and baptized there on 8 Sept 1867. Her father was from Harby and her mother was from Colton Bassett. At the time of her birth, her father was a miller, but by the time he younger brother was born in 1869, the family had relocated to Harby where her dad was a cottager of three acres. Ten years later he was an innkeeper and a farmer and employed one boy. She lived with her parents in 1901 as a 33 year old unmarried woman. At that time her father was a retired innkeeper.

In 1905 at about 37 or 38 she married for the first time to the widower Thomas Attewell who was about 23 years her senior. She became the stepmother of his 3 adult children.
