H.J. Messinger, 83, one of Imperial Valley's most prominent pioneers, died yesterday in an El Centro rest home. Messinger arrived in Imperial Valley in 1903 and played a leading role in the development of the valley. He was a member of this city's first council.
His son, Marcus A., now a lieutenant in the Navy, was the first white boy to be born in Holtville.
Prior to coming to Imperial Valley, Messinger had been an Indian trader in Arizona, and also had served as superintendent of the Navaho Indian reservation in that state.
Final rites will be held at the Fields Chapel here at 3 p.m. tomorrow, with interment at Terrace Park Cemetery.
