William A. Mentch, 74, a former Kansas Citian who won the Navy Cross in World War I, died yesterday at St. Petersburg, Fla., where he had lived the last two years.
Prior to his retirement from the Navy in 1946, he had served 44 years an in three wars, the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II.
He received the Navy Cross after carrying secret orders from President Wilson to an American general in France. He was a chief warrant gunner.
Mr. Mentch was born in Kansas City. After World War I, he was a recruiter for the Navy here and in the late 1930's was on inactive duty. He returned to active duty in 1942.
His first wife, Mrs. Irene Mentch died here in in 1954.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Loretta Mentch of the home; a son, Harry V. Mentch, 346 North Brighton; a sister, Mrs. Ica Bourne, 625 Spruce; a brother, Verner S. Mentch, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services and cremation will be in St. Petersburg.
