John Kennedy Weldon came to Texas with his parents and settled in Fortune Bend. After the death of his parents in his early youth, his first job was in a cow camp as a cook. He spent time as a horse wrangler working on the SET Ranch. Before 1900, Palo Pinto County land records show he bought a small farm and ranch in Sand Valley. He established his cattle herd and started growing cotton in the valley.
John Kennedy Weldon married Margaret Teresa Costello on 25 May 1904. They had five children.
The couple grew bumper cotton crops and used the income to buy a ranch near McAdams Peak in 1913. John Weldon's brand was the Half-Circle O Bar, but later changed his brand to the W Bar according to the Cattle Brands at the Palo Pinto County courthouse.
