David was born in St Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, to Lyell and Ruth Cassel Ludwig. He graduated from North Central High School in 1963. He later graduated Indiana University in 1968, and then attained his Masters in Social Work from St Louis University.
In August 1970 he married Katherine Delmerico, and together they moved to Vermont, where they lived for 30 years and raised their two children. He worked as a clinical social worker for many years.
In the summer of 2021, David and Katherine moved to Concord, New Hampshire.
