Anna Margarethe was born in Katzenfurt, Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine (modern-day Germany) to Jost Heukrath and Maria Catharina Jung.

Anna was married to Friedrich Dross on Jan. 17, 1830, in Katzenfurt, and they had six children. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1849.
