Doris A. (Atkinson) Maher, 92, of Newington, a loving Mom, Mimi, Grammie and friend, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert B. Maher.

Born and raised in Providence, RI, daughter of the late Frederick and Melba (Short) Atkinson, she was a Newington resident for 65 years.


Doris graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1952 and was a lifelong member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority.

She worked at the Hartford Board of Education office of early childhood education for many years before her retirement.

With her chef husband Bob, she loved to organize dinner parties and holidays with family.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting and had a special eye for decorating.

She loved skiing and tennis with family and friends.


She leaves her three children, Douglas Maher of NH, Susan Botticello of Rocky Hill, and William Maher and his wife Tonimarie of MA, and nine grandchildren.

She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Nancy Atkinson and Phyllis Maher, and many lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her brother Alan Atkinson and her son-in-law, Stephen Botticello.


Visitation and her funeral service were held at the Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial.

Doris was laid to rest in West Meadow Cemetery.
