Enlisted on 3 August 1861 at Dowagiac, Cass County, Michigan; he was residing at Lawton, Van Buren County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 28 years of age; mustered in on 20 August 1861, Company D, Michigan 6th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; he was wounded on 20 June 1863 at Port Hudson, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana; mustered out on 28 July 1863 dying from his wounds at a Convalescent Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.GEORGE WASHINGTON ALFORD;

From Lawton, Michigan George enlisted at Dowagiac for 3 years service at the age of 28 as a Corporal on August 3, 1861.
He served with the Regiment until he was wounded in action on June 30, 1863 at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
He was taken to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where on July 28, 1863 he died of his wounds and is now buried there in the National Cemetery, Grave #2381.
His Michigan service record lists him as George W. Alfred.

His wife was Anne Maria Stewart. They had 3 children, two living at the time of his death.

George Washington Alford married his stepsister, Ann Marie Stewart. Their daughter, Stella, died in 1862, a few months before her father died of wounds in the Civil War. Ann Marie and son Frank died within a week of each other in 1864 of cholera, leaving the youngest son (George Washington/Wallace Alford Adams) an orphan.
