Being the youngest son, he would not inherit the farm in Norway and so emigrated to the United States. His uncle John Anderson paid his way and he worked for him until the debt was paid. Through a family connection, he heard of a single woman in Hanley Falls, Minnesota, whose family originated in the same area that he was from in Norway. They met and married and lived on the farm that Mathias had acquired in Knife Lake Township in Kanabec County, Minnesota. He was infected with the flu during the WWI pandemic and developed a chronic enlarged heart which took his life at a very early age in 1926.
