Dorothy Jean Alston, daughter of the late Plummer Alston, Sr. and Annie Gladys Wiggins Alston, was born in Edgecombe County, Rocky Mount, N.C. At an early age she joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, N.C. After moving to Greensboro she affiliated with Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she was an ordained Lay Minister.
She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. After which she matriculated at N.C. A&T State University, earning undergraduate and master degrees. Doctorate degrees at N.C. Central University and UNC-Greensboro, respectively. She had other professional development experiences at Harvard University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She served the State of North Carolina for 34 years, 28 of which were spent at N.C. A&T State University, retiring as Special Assistant to Chancellor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Plummer Alston, Jr. and Plummer Massenburg, and sister Ella Skinner Wilkins.
