On Tuesday morning this community was startled to learn of the sudden death of T. Barker which occurred about four o'clock at his home south of Nelson. He was in town Monday evening to take the children home from school. He had also gotten some repairs for the wind mill and upon arriving at home he proceeded to put the repairs in place. When the work was completed he went to the house and began to complain of not feeling well. One of the children was called in and the father was put to bed for the last time. Dr. Buffington was summoned, but medical skill could offer no relief and as above stated he passed away over the river at four o'clock Tuesday morning. The immediate cause of his death was pronounced by the physicians to be apoplexy. The funeral occurred from the Presbyterian church (sic) yesterday afternoon at two o'clock.

Thomas Barker was born near Penerith, Cumberland, England, May 28th, 1840 (sic), and remained there until he was 23 years of age when he went to Australia. In 1869 he returned to England, where he lived until 1871, when he came to America. He located near Nebraska City at which place he was married to Eliza E. West April 1st 1873.

He came to Nuckolls county (sic) in 1893. He was the father of nine children, six of whom survive him. These with a mother are the chief mourners. Mr. Barker was well and favorably known and the sorely bereaved family has the deepest sympathy of a host of friends.
