Meachum family arrived in Grimes County from North Carolina shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War settling originally near Plantersville, TX. As a young man William Winfree Meachum attended Soule College at Chappel Hill, TX and graduated as a member of the class of 1862. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the Texas Volunteer Infantry of the Confederate Army and served for the duration of the war. Upon his return to Grimes County he worked as a school teacher, moving to Anderson in 1869. There he met and married Mary Elizabeth McDonald in 1869. Mr. Meachum, also known as "Colonel Meachum" studied law in the office of his father-in-law. He was a licensed attorney in 1871 and practiced law for over 50 years in Grimes County.
