Bendik Olaus Bendiksen Halvorsæter Sather was born on January 17, 1862 in Ørskog, Norway. He was the second oldest child of Bendik Peder Bendiksen Halvorsæter and Karen "Marte" (Knudsdatter) Halvorsæter. Bendik and all four of his younger brothers would eventually emigrate to America.

When Ben first came to Genesee in 1888 he was employed on the Sam Johnson farm, later owned by Leo Ernst. Mr. Sather did much of the work on the construction of the fairly large barn, including the hewing of the timbers brought to the building site from what was known to pioneers as the "Troy school section."

Ben Sather, as he was best known to his many friends in Genesee and Moscow, married Martha Peterson on March 10, 1893 in Moscow, Idaho. In 1926 Ben and Martha retired from farming and moved to Genesee for a year. They then moved to Moscow where they resided for many years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1943.

After the death of his wife Martha in 1949, Ben went to Clarkston to reside at the Riverview Rest home where he passed away, at the age of 89, Sunday, August 26, 1951. He is buried in the Genesee Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery not far from their family farm.
