Funeral services for W.C.Brown 94 of Orient former resident of Fontanelle were held last Thursday afternoon in the Ewing Funeral Home in Fontanelle and were conducted by the Rev.Perkins Pastor of the Orient Methodist Church. Hymns were sung by Mrs. Claude Sivadge with H.J. Stuhlmiller at the piano.
Burial was in the Fontanelle Cemetery. Those who served as casket bearers were Veldon Battle, Dr. Higens, Bert Schantol, George W.Dennis and Arnold Ruth.
Mr.Brown was found dead in his bed Tuesday morning last week.
William Cogall Brown was born May 13,1855 in Chester County Pennsylvania and passed away April 3, 1950 at his home in Orient, Iowa. He would have been 95 if he had lived until next May 13.
He was a son of Hiram and Hannah Wilson Brown and with his parents he moved to Illinois. In 1864 they moved to Jasper County, Iowa leaving Illinois the day after Abraham Lincoln was elected to a second term as President.
In 1879 he was married to Ella Elmira Kendig who died in 1910. They were the parents of a daughter Beulah who was born in 1880 and died in 1889. She was buried in the Fontanelle Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs, Brown came to Adair County in 1881 and to Fontanelle in 1885. In 1904 they moved to Weubleau, Mo. which was their home until the death of Mrs. Brown who was also buried in the Fontanelle Cemetery. Mr. Brown returned to Adair County in 1912 and resided at Orient until his death. In 1913 he was married to Mary Sawyer who died in 1937.
Mr. Brown joined the Odd Fellows Lodge in 1885 and is a 50 year member also a member of the Iowa Three Quarter Century Club.
He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Ina Hughes of Washington, D.C.; 2 grandchildren Wilma Mothershed of Texas and Walter Hughes of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and 2 great-grandchildren.
