Fatal Shooting Of Walter Hodges While Boating On Conesus Lake

The investigation continues into the shooting death of Walter Hodges, who was found drifting in a boat on Conesus Lake with a fatal bullet wound to his head. No weapon was found inside the boat with Walter, though a friend states he had lent him a 22-caliber rifle just days before his death.

The police are open to the idea of an accidental death, whereas a self-inflicted shot happened and the gun fell overboard. But that is just one scenario being entertained.

They are also investigating possible suicide and murder, but there are no real facts to support any of those conclusions so far.

The theory that Hodges, a real estate salesman who died in General Hospital Friday night of a head wound inflicted by a.22 caliber bullet, was the victim of a stray shot still predominated, but investigators insisted that "no other avenue" of possibility was being neglected in the effort to solve the case.

Sheriff Donald L. McColl of Livingston County and an aide spent several hours here yesterday with city detectives Bernard Dailey and William Foubister, but McColl declined to discuss the purpose of his mission. It was learned elsewhere that authorities have confiscated a number of guns for examination after an intensive check of the lakeside based on reports of the shooting at the time that Hodges was believed to have been fatally wounded.

Such guns presumably would be test-fired, and the slugs would be compared with the one removed from the victim's skull.

State Police and the Monroe County sheriff's office also are en- gaged in investigating various angles of the case, but neither last night advanced reports of progress.

Funeral services for the victim were conducted yesterday at Hedges Memorial Chapel, 271 University Ave., and burial in Riverside Cemetery followed. Survivors: Hodges' wife, Mrs. Marion Hodges; a son, Walter F. Hodges Jr.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Hodges, Hollywood, Calif.; a brother, Robert T. Hodges, Hermosa, California.
