William "Bill" Herman Johnson, 97, passed away July 29, 2023.
Bill, a lifelong Snohomish resident, was born April 14, 1926 to Gus and Minnie Johnson. Gus was a Swedish immigrant, and Minnie was a Snohomish native. Bill left home and school to serve in the United States Maritime Service during WWII, where he was stationed on a supply ship in the South Pacific. He returned home to graduate from Snohomish High School. Bill worked for the United States Postal Service, initially delivering mail on foot in downtown Snohomish, and later as a rural carrier.
Bill married Elsa (Larson), another lifelong Snohomish resident of Swedish descent, on September 29, 1951. They raised their two children, Kris (1952) and Brian (1957), on a beautiful piece of land in the Ludwig area of Snohomish. Bill loved animals, and had a special fondness for German shorthaired pointer dogs. He enjoyed hunting birds with his dogs. Bill loved nature, small towns, the Lawrence Welk Show, westerns on tv, reading, Alaska, fishing, and hiking. He also loved his country. He loved solitude and disliked change. Above all else, Bill loved his family.
Bill became a widower in 2015 when his beloved wife, Elsa, passed away. He managed to continue to live on his own, in his own home and in the company of his sweet and faithful dog, Sis, until August 2020. Health complications from his many years forced the move to an adult family home. Bill spent the last three years of his life at Wellness Village in Bothell, where he was cared for with all of the tenderness and respect that his family could hope for.
Bill is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Moira Johnson-Ewing; daughter and son-in-law Kris and Craig Hansen; granddaughters Beth (Al) Harrington and Maggie (Jason) Vice; great-grandchildren Lillian, Lucy, and Calvin Harrington, and Connor and Sean Ashton; nieces Molly (David) Brodie and Tracy Carson; nephews Gary (Barbara) Larson-Klein and David Larson; several great-nieces and cousins; and his German shorthaired pointer, Sis.
Graveside services will be held at the G.A.R. Cemetery in Snohomish at 10 am on August 15, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, vfw.org.
