It is said that Tom was born in Germany or Holland and came to this country in 1816, at the age of 12. It is said that he stowed away on a ship to get to America. He married Margaret Deseria (Peggy) Lamberth July 8, 1828. They had nine (9) children.

He was from Holland (today, The Netherlands). He arrived in New Orleans in February 1819. He was naturalized in the 8th Jud. Dist Court in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, on November 19, 1846. According to his naturalization papers, he was born May 11, 1801. Witnesses to the naturalization were Thomas Wainwright and Henry Melton.
