James William Hunter, 54, of Moorhead, MN, passed away at the Palliative Care Unit of Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota on Friday morning, June 8, 2007 after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

"Jim" was born July 7, 1952 in Crookston, MN, the son of Lewis and Viva (Lund) Hunter and grew to manhood in Lancaster on the family farm. He received his education at Lancaster Public School and graduated as an honor student in 1970.

In September of 1970, he joined the North Dakota Army National Guard at Grafton and trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was honorably discharged in June of 1976. He attended Moorhead State University for 3 years. After college, Jim made his living farming in the Lancaster and Orleans area.

For the next 22 years of Jim's life, he worked as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service. After working a few years in the Hallock Post office, he moved to Georgetown, MN after taking his new job in the Moorhead Post office.

On July 31, 1993, he was united in marriage to Wendy Karsky at Lancaster, MN, and they made their home in Moorhead.

Jim was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. Jim was a member of the Lancaster American Legion Post #214. He will be long remembered by his co-workers at the Moorhead Post office for his character drawings of each co-worker and the pranks and jokes pulled upon them by Jim.

He is survived by his mother Viva Hunter of Lancaster, MN; wife, Wendy of Moorhead, MN; two daughters, Amy (Shane) Olson of Halma, MN, and Kari(Kevin) Mitchell of Glyndon, MN; one son, Scott (Thyra) Karsky of Lake Bronson, MN; five grandchildren, Trent Erickson, Kaeli and Briana Mitchell, Keely Olson and Cody Karsky; one sister Virginia (Pat) Coffield of Lancaster; two brothers, Kendall (Kathy) Hunter of Lancaster and Daniel Hunter of Lancaster; many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Lewis and a nephew Kevin Hunter.

Funeral Services were June 12, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church at Hallock.

Interment was at Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery in Lancaster.

Soloists were Shane Olson and Galen Nordin.

Military Honors were accorded by the Lancaster American Legion Post #214 and the Halma-Lake Bronson Sons of American Legion #315.
