Professional Football Player, Politician. He was born Larry Jack Mildren in Kingsville, Texas and raised in Abilene. He achieved All-American status at the quarterback position during his collegiate years at the University of Oklahoma, while leading a Sooner team known for their high powered "wishbone offense" to victory against Auburn in the 1972 Sugar Bowl earning him MVP honors. He played at the defensive back (safety) position for three seasons (1972 to 1974) in the National Football League with the Baltimore Colts and New England Patriots. He was chosen by the Colts in the 2nd round of the 1972 NFL Draft and appeared in 42 career games. After retiring from football, Midren became active in politics and served as Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma from 1990 until 1994. He died from cancer at the age of 58.
