Works of John Palmer and his descendants from booklet by Russell Palmer,DeBary Florida. Works has been registered with DAR and SAR for those of direct lineage.
In 1840, George moved with his parents from Port Republic Virginia to Illinois. In 1849 began attending Illinois Wesleyan University,Bloomington, IL, sweeping rooms, kindling fires, and ringing the bell for funds to attend. After 3 years, he attended Northwestern University for two years, followed by special ministerial training in Garrett Biblical Institute. He then entered the Central Illinois Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church in Sept 1857. During his student days at Northwestern and Garrett, his maximum expenditure for food was one dollar per week. Much to his regret he found it necessary to drop out of college before completing his course, however he has made such a record of scholarship at Northwestern that in 1877 they awarded him the degree of Master of Arts; and a few years later, Illinois Wesleyan conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Divinity.
