William Arthur Adams, son of John and Martha Adams, was born March 3, 1895 at Kirksville, Mo. and died in Des Moines June 5, 1966 at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 2 days.
He grew to manhood in and near the place of his birth and attended rural school there.
As a youth he attended and later united with the First Baptist Church in Canesville, Mo. When he came to the Spring Hill community he transferred his membership for a while to the First Baptist in Indianola but later transferred to the Methodist Church at Spring Hill where his membership has been for many years.
He served his country in the First World War in the United States Army and was a member of Warren Barracks No. 1647, World War I Veterans. In Canesville, Mo., Nov. 9, 1919, he was united in marriage to Calista Merle Hoadley. Twelve children were born to this union. Three died in infancy. The other nine were Eureta, Howard, Henry, Donald, Glenn, Warren, Marilyn, Vernon and Rosemary.
Soon after their marriage they came to the Spring Hill community to make their home. For several years he worked in the coal mines of the community until they were closed.
He was employed in Des Moines several years before his retirement. He was also custodian of the Methodist Church in Spring Hill.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau for several years.
He is survived by his wife Merle of the Spring Hill community; the sons and daughters, Mrs. Eureta Keeney of Indianola, the Rev. Howard Adams of Dallas, Tex., Henry Adams, United States Marine Corps of New Orleans, La., Donald and Warren, both of near Chariton, Ia., Glenn, Warrant Officer, United States Air Force, stationed in Frankfort, Germany, Mrs. LaVerne (Marilyn) Greif of Grimes, Ia., Vernon of Sioux City, Ia. and Mrs. Gordon (Rosemary) Kauffman.
Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, seven step-grand-children; one brother, Orval Adams of Kirksville, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. F. L. Marshall, also of Kirksville, Mo., a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Glen W. Lamb June 7 at the Overton Funeral Home. Interment was in Webb Cemetery.
