Mrs. Olive Harris Andrews, a leader in Women's work for the Methodist Protestant Church and widow of Dr. R. M. Andrews, first president of High Point College died Friday May 23, 1969 in Charlotte after a long illness. Mrs. Andrews was a resident of Greensboro from 1912-1924 and again from 1938 to 1964 when she entered the Methodist Home in Charlotte. For several years she was a member of the Enterpe Club of Greensboro.
The third daughter of the late Samuel Rogers and Rosalie Hicks Harris, Mrs. Andrews was born in Henderson, N.C. where she attended the Horner School for Young Ladies and the Henderson High School before studying at what is now UNC in Greensboro. She studied at the Art Students League of New York in New York City. She joined the Methodist Protestant Church early in her youth.
In 1909, she married Robert Macon Andrews who was a Methodist minister and educator. She held various officers in State Woman's Work of the church from 1924 to 1939 including president from 1936 to 1939. After unification with the Methodist Church, Mrs. Andrews was the first secretary of Christian Social Relations and local church activities of the Women's Society of Christian Service in the Western North Carolina Conference; then at the end of her term of office became the second honorary life patron of WSCS. During the term of her husband's presidency of High Point College, Mrs. Andrews was a member of the Tea and Topics Club and superintendent of the Primary Department of the First Methodist Protestant Church Sunday School in High Point. Dr. Andrews predeceased her.
Mrs. Andrews was survived by four children, Rosalie Andrews of Charlotte, N.C., Alma Andrews Clark of Greenville, N.C., Dorothea Andrews (Jordan) of Washington, D.C., and Robert M. Andrews Jr. of Columbia, S.C. and by four grandchildren. She was also survived by two brothers, S. R. Harris, Jr. of Henderson N.C., and Julian Earle Harris of Madison, Wis., and three sisters, Mrs. S.R. Watson and Mrs. Ethel Harris Kirby of Henderson, N.C. and Mrs. James H. Pyle of Baltimore, Md. Funeral service were held at the Harry and Bryant Chapel in The Oaks. The service was conducted by Dr. H. Eugene Peacock of the First United Methodist CHurch.
